As early as age 6, Crystal Kay was already doing what would later transport her into international spotlight—singing. Although her debut as a singer was for several commercials at the age 12, she had already secured a record deal with a sub label of Sony Music Entertainment, Epic Records in Japan. A year later, she released her first single titled Eternal Memories which was well received for a debut effort. Before the end of the same year Crystal released two more singles, Teenage Universe~Chewing Gum Baby and Komichi no Hana.
Buoyed by the acceptance of these singles, Crystal Kay established herself as a serious musician by releasing her debut album C.L.L Crystal Lover Light on March 23 2000. On the same day, she also released her fourth single titled Shadows of Desire, her first A-side sung entirely in English. About a year later, Kay released another single working with Shinichi Osawa and Hiroshi Fujiwara. Other singles that followed in the same year (2001) were Ex Boyfriend (featuring Verbal of M-flo) and Think of You. In the same year, Kay released her second album, “637: Always and Forever, which was among the top 20 on the Oricon charts.
With the success of her second album, Kay’s popularity began to soar and in August 2002, she released her eighth single, Hard to Say, her first single to be among the Oricon top thirty. In the same year, her ninth single, Girl You Love and her third album, Almost 17 were released. It was her third album that shot her to the limelight, peaking at number 2 on the Oricon charts and selling over 51,000 copies in the first week of its release and her first platinum certified album, spending a year on the charts. From this point onward, Crystal’s popularity began to soar and she continued establishing herself with her releases.
In 2004, Crystal Kay released her fourteenth single, Motherland, which went on to chart at number 9 and was the ending theme for episodes 26 to 41 of the anime version of Fullmetal Alchemist. In the same year, Kay’s first compilation album, CK5, was released to successful acclaim and it was number 2 on the charts for 49 straight weeks. Other works that followed include: Bye My Darling, Kiss and her 5th album, Crystal Style (number 2 on the charts). In the same year, her 17th single was released and has been the best selling of her career as of 2011. Other works followed and in 2007, Crystal Kayreleased her 7th album, All Yours, which went on to chart at number 1.
Throughout her career, Crystal’s songs have regularly been used for different commercials (her first “professional” foray into singing) and movies including Tulley’s Coffee, Satorare and the Japanese version of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston’s He’s Just Not That Into You. In 2010, Kay had her fist role in a drama series, Hidarime Tantei Eye as Kokusho Akira. With the successful release of over 24 singles, and 12 albums at just 25 years of age, we can expect a whole lot more from Crystal Kay
